Let Justice Run Down Like Water - Amos 5:24

The verse of the day yesterday (July 13, 2025) was Amos 5:24. I read through the rest of chapter 5. The prophet describes the extreme corruption and idolatry rampant in his land - his present evil age. It reminded me of Paul preaching to the Galatians that Jesus "gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen." (Gal. 1:4)

It is God's will that we be delivered from evil. Every age has its present evil. However, in the middle of his lengthy diatribe on evil, Amos also said:

BUT let justice run down like water, (comforting, assuring)
And righteousness like a mighty stream (dislodging, reordering).
I hear this as the ongoing challenge to God's intercessors - to unite with the will of God to bring His kingdom on earth, even in the face of evil warring against that outcome with unfathomable deceit.

I found these readings both practical and realistic, overwhelming and encouraging, in that we can always exercise our will to side with God no matter the obstacles, and there IS peace in His domain.

Yes Lord, let justice run down like water, And righteousness like a mighty stream.
